England win but fail to impress

May 30th, 2006 | By: Jon | 1 Comment »

Despite beating Hungary 3-1 in a friendly this evening England failed to impress. They hardly did anything to suggest they’ll trouble Sweden. Playing up front Steven Gerrard looked uncomfortable and unable to make the killer runs he regularly does for Liverpool. Michael Owen was dreadful as a solitary striker and was made to look second best after Peter Crouch scored a blinder of a goal late in the match.

Without Wayne Rooney Sven-Göran’s England just don’t look like a team capable of winning the World Cup. Then again, I’ve been wrong before.

I’ve got to say: I wasn’t high on Crouch early on. But after seeing the way he played tonight, Sven might just want to reconsider whether or not to put him in the starting XI.

To be sure, he came on after 60 minutes and benefited from fresh legs; but Owen did indeed look lost out there.

Also, while Gerard did look pretty good, Lampard didn’t look like he fit in at all.

And what was Sol Campbell doing out there? He seemed to be taking revenge on a couple of tackles on Torghelli. When he came on Hungary took a very quick restart, and Torghelli had a shot on goal.

Beckham’s crosses were in GREAT form; and that’s not good for the competition.
