Oh, no! Lagerbäck Believes Svensson Could Do A Job On the Left.
Swedish coach Lasse Lagerbäck is making mutterings about possibly using Anders “That Goal” Svensson on the left wing at the World Cup. Why, I’m not really sure.
Fair enough, he’s doing okay at Elfsborg on the left-wing, but there’s a difference playing in the Allsvenskan League compared to, say, the Premiership in England where he looked out of sorts whenever Southampton deployed him on the left.
Kim Källström must surely be Lasse Lagerbäck’s first choice on the left. He’s had a stonking season at Rennes and looks considerably fitter than Svensson, who although in better shape than last season, still seems to be carrying a bit of a spare tire round his waste.
Worse still, Aftonbladet reports that Lasse Lagerbäck is considering using Svensson and Källström in his starting eleven.
“Anders is a possible option for the left wing,” Lagerbäack admitted, causing this football fan to go all twitchy for a minute or two.
Has Lagerbäck forgotten how badly Svensson’s last venture on the left went? We lost 3-2 to the Norwegians in June last year.
No, Svensson would be much better deployed just behind the front strikers, or even, er, warming the bench. He’s a good holding midfielder, and capable of providing a bit of creativity but I’m not convinced he’s got the legs for 90 minutes in the June sunshine.
Still, he’s pretty good at free kicks, as we all remember.
