Rooney to face Sweden?

June 7th, 2006 | By: Jon | No Comments »

The Swedish press are awash this evening with the news that Wayne “Shreck” Rooney will feature in this summer’s World Cup.

Appparently the lad is healing well and X-rays show that he’ll be able to play at some point.

England are focussing so much on Rooney that the pressure on the lad is enormous. No doubt Lars Lagerbäck has got Olof Mellberg and Teddy Lucic sharpening their studs ahead of any possible meeting between themselves and Master Rooney.

As Rooney is such a physical player, he is not the kind of forward who will really worry our defense. Beckham’s crosses and set pieces are much more threatening. Michael Owen’s pace, if he has any left, is also the kind of thing that might trouble Sweden, especially down the right.

If we can get two decent wins under our belts then the match against Enland will be a formality.

At least with Wayne Rooney in the tournement there will be something for the press to focus on and allow Sweden to focus on what they do best: playing as a team.
