Stockholmers Not Excited By the World Cup - Yet

Stockholm doesn’t seem to be prepared to cheer the lads on yet, according to Martin Nordskog writing in the Stockholm blog.

This summer’s World Cup is rapidly approaching and for those of us in Stockholm it’s hard not to miss the signs that people are a bit uncertain about the national squads chances. [opens link in a new window] In previous years there’s been a cavalier approach to the tournament by Sweden, with a sense of fun and optimism bubbling through the country. Now it might have something to do with the hundred days of snow that kept us quiet during the winter, but this year something’s not quite right. Gone is the optimism, the belief that he who dares wins. No, this time around things are decidedly gloomy.

Personally, I think it will pick up this week. Today’s edition of newspaper Dagens Nyheter included a squad overview to whet the appetite and I even saw a woman wearing a replica Sweden shirt this morning at the mall. It’s just the typical Swedish reserve. Come the first match the bars will be full of people desperate for Sweden to win.
