Svensson tips Sweden to make “last four”

Anders Svensson is in confident mood despite the team’s recent run of poor form. In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian the 29-year old creative midfielder talks up Sweden’s chances and claims the side have the quality to make the last four of the competition just like back in 1994 in the USA.

Obviously Anders has had a touch too much sunshine lately: this is not the best Swedish squad for years. Henke Larsson, Fredrik Ljungberg and Zlatan Ibrahimovic may well be world class, but it would be some kind of turn around for a side who haven’t exactly thrilled in recent games to suddenly gel at a major tournament. With just one goal and no win in four matches we’re not one of the in form teams.

Then again, that’s what’s so wonderful about a competition like the World Cup. You can struggle through the group stages, record a couple of wins and suddenly you’re in the semis. So there you go: maybe Svensson’s right.

Heja Sverige!

Geez… its only friendlies so far. Sure Sweden’s form has not been stellar in the warm up games (to say the least), but LOTS of teams have gone far in the world cup coming from poor friendly games.

If they don’t turn out a convincing win against T&T, *then* I’ll worry. But given the great qualifying run, I have great confidence in the team.

AND as far this not being the best squad in years… What squad has been better recently? IMO squad is overall the best on paper (and with most potential) since 1994.

1994 was superb. I also think we were better four years ago. And at the Euro Champs two years ago. Since Lagerbäck took over as sole manager something has been lacking.

Still, I am looking forward to be proved wrong. In many respects it’s easier for a team like Sweden to go into a tournement like this without the pressure.
