Sweden limp out of the Cup with a whimper

June 24th, 2006 | By: Jon | 15 Comments »

So we’re out. What is it the poet T.S. Eliot said: “not with a bang but a whimper” (The Waste Land).
That pretty much sums up our performance this evening.

Isaksson was class this evening but the rest of the team barely turned in a performance they could hold their head up after. I do think coach Lagerbäck made a dreadful decision in taking Kim Källström off when Teddy Lucic saw red. It would have been more daring to go for three at the back and keep Kim on and try and attack the German penalty area.

As it was we stuck with 4-3-2 and lost our way in the middle of the park. Apart from Henke Larsson’s spectacularly missed penalty, we didn’t threaten the German goal.

I have to let this defeat sink in and then I’ll post a couple of farewell-to-Sweden posts tomorrow.

Sweden, what happened?

Yes, the ref did you no favours with the scandalous red card and Germany played beautiful attacking football, but you had nothing to offer. I was shocked.

The England game must have taken more out of your players than they’d thought.

Best of luck.

I’m from Uruguay but I love the Swedish Football Team, and I’m really sad that they are out of the cup now. Anyway, it was a bit of bad luck that Sweden had to play against Germany, which is one of the candidates to win. This blog is great, and through it i would like to send all my support from this part of the world!!

Arriba Suecia!!!

I was in a pretty fucked up situation when I relized - after the England-Game - that my two favourite teams will play against each other in the 1/8-finals. My heart beats for Germany for I am German and of course I support my team first, but I also love the swedish football team, for I love sweden and football (yeah that makes sense). So I won and lost in the same moment today (allthough it was just a short moment). I thought of all these thousands of swedish fans celebrating this World Cup, their team and themselves, who we’re disappointed so strongly this afternoon. First two goals, then the red card and in the end the missing of the penalty. A fan must often suffer from these moments of sadness and disappointment. So my thoughts today we’re also with you all, who lost the match. Hopefully you can say afterwards: We had no chance, we’ve lost against the World Cup Winner.

Cheers,
Jens

Damn shame for Larsson’s WC career to end like that. I had Sweden through to the semi’s, but that was with them winning their group and having a better opening knock-out round match. Getting Germany at home was a tall order, and while I didn’t think Sweden would prevail, I expected a very tight game. Sweden’s been something of a “sleeper”, a top side that doesn’t really carry that monicker. Too bad you’re out.

Why oh why????
4 years waiting after the Senegal match and again bad luck :(
We all know that the team always played better as the game progressed but with 2 goals down it was really impossible to come back today…
I’m really sad and feel empty. But let’s keep the faith, Zlatan and Kim will come back in RPA in 2010 !!!!!!!

n Korea and now this? why?

There is one thing you Swedish people stil can do: learn some Argentinian songs and go to the match against Germany all dressed and painted in blue and white.

Next time, Sweden! ;)They’ll just have to come back in four years and prove themselves. Although…it’ll be sad to no longer see Larsson on the team -.-

Isaksson has impressed me as the keeper of the tournament. His saves this match kept the score a lot closer.

Shame for Henrik. I thought Freddie should’ve taken it but anyway, a damn shame for him. He deserved better.

I agree with Källström. Why take him off. Does not make any sense.

Sorry to see Sweden go so early.

Talking about biased refereeing :

I am surprised that the Swedish FA did not protest
after the world cup game with Germany.

It was plain for all to see, from the close-up video replay,
that the cynical referee was on the side of the Germans.
He was clearly seen smiling cynically and sarcastically
in front of Teddy Lucic when he showed the red card.

Those two fouls by Lucic were hardly fouls at all. In the
first case, he had already kicked the ball away before he
tripped the German player - that was intelligent defending,
and at most only a free kick should have been given against
Lucic - clearly not a yellow card. In the second situation,
Lucic merely tugged Klose’s t-shirt gently - I’ve seen much
worse shirt-tugging in other games and not so much a whistle
was even blown. To my shock, that dirty Brazilian referee,
Carlos Simon, gave him a second yellow card and the red,
smiling cynically at Lucic. Obviously, after being surrounded
by the Germans, he dared not offend the home team and
the crowd, for fear of his own skin.

When the video zoomed in -
Carlos Simon was CLEARLY seen smiling later with a German
player who PATTED him on the back, then APPLAUDED him !
This makes me wonder if this chicken had been hand-picked
by the Germans for this match.

This is why I’ve always said that FIFA is a useless hypocritic
body - they penalise and suspend players all the time, but always
protect their own people - their referees.

Källström was a disaster! Can’t you see that? If you have a video just have alook at his extremely slow performance when Ballack just takes the ball from him which leads to the second goal.

Taking hinm off was the best choice Lagerbäck did this tournament since Linderoth and Ljungberg had to do his work anyway, he was just running around with no clues what was going on.

With Källström Sweden has no future! And sadly enough, we have noone else since Svensson has lost it and the others, such Djuric, are too young and lack experiende.

I’m an American that cheered Sweden on throughout this whole tournament, feeling they were the underdog that would surprise anyone. I’ll admit,I couldn’t have been more wrong. They score a total of 3 goals in the Cup, how do they expect to go anywhere past the first knockout round? It pained me greatly to see them give up two goals in the first twelve minutes, and my first feeling of hope came when Larsson had a PK chance, but missed it.

I really do think the big problem for Sweden was Zlatan. Where the hell was he when his team needed him? Injured or not, this is the World Cup, everytime he touched the ball it was taken away from him, he got what, maybe 2 shots on goal?

It’s going to be a long 2 years until Euro 2008, but in the meantime, lets go Freddie and Arsenal!
