Sweden not so Sweet against Saudis

January 19th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | No Comments »

Playing with a lineup of domestic-based players whose only physical activity the past few months has been shoveling snow, Sweden drew with Saudi Arabia 1-1 in a game which has been described by Sweden’s coach Lars Lagerbäck as “lethargic.”

Sweden scored first when IF Elfsborg midfielder Anders Svensson slotted in after being teed up by Mattias Jonson. In the second half, the Saudis appeared to be the fresher of the team and a goal by Mohammed Haidar earned them a tie.

Says Lagerbäck: “I’m pleased with our first half but we tired in the second. But it’s to be expected as the bulk of players are currently in pre-season traning.”

Sweden will take on Jordan on Sunday.
