As Sweden Prepares For Euro 2008

By: eddy | February 23rd, 2008 | 1 Comment »

During Sweden’s last friendly against Turkey, coach Lars Lagerbäck tried some new players including FC Groningen striker Marcus Berg and Rasmus Lindgren, who recently joined AFC Ajax from Groningen play well. I think this is a very positive development because it was beginning to look as if we were running short of players to compete at the very top.
With most our veteran players nearing the end of their playing careers and others having hung up their boots, Sweden cannot be lacking behind the major European powers like Italy,Spain and the likes of them.
Sweden play Brazil on the 26th of march, i think we are likely to see a continuation of the current player testing by Lagerbäck.
Our other friendlies before the Euro are:
Sweden V Slovenia —-26th may
Sweden V Ukraine —-1st june

Continuity sometimes doesn’t always mean that a team will play great football and achieve success.Lagerbäck has been Sweden coach since 2000 when he jointly coached the team with Tommy Söderberg, and then given the sole responsibility to handle the team since 2004.He sure did not do well at the last world cup making certain blunders that really questioned his ability ... By: eddy | February 13th, 2008 | No Comments »

I don’t know if we should read much into these FIFA rankings, i never do because the teams that are sometimes ranked higher ends up the most disappointing.
Nigeria was Africa’s highest ranked team before the cup of nations in Ghana started and they ended up one of the worse teams in that tournament. In our case here, we are dropping in ... [read]

In the cold light of day I’ve had a good think about our performances and players at the World Cup: here are my closing Top 10 thoughts about Sweden’s World Cup adventure and the future.
1. Lars Lagerbäck is not the man to manage Sweden from now on. Three victories in four major tournaments is not good enough. The final nail ... [read]

Sweden limp out of the Cup with a whimper

By: Jon | June 24th, 2006 | 15 Comments »

So we’re out. What is it the poet T.S. Eliot said: “not with a bang but a whimper” (The Waste Land).
That pretty much sums up our performance this evening.
Isaksson was class this evening but the rest of the team barely turned in a performance they could hold their head up after. I do think coach Lagerbäck made a dreadful ... [read]

Let’s sort the details out first. Sweden meet England in the clash for Group B’s top spot this evening. With both teams undefeated, the winners will top the group and go on to face the second placed team in Group A – either Ecuador or Germany.
If the match between the two European sides is a draw, England will top the ... [read]

The view from Sweden

By: Jon | June 18th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

The coverage of the World Cup in Stockholm and Sweden this week provided an insight into the workings of the Swedish psyche. In the face of adversity Swedes self-destruct, and lash out at their leaders. But when things go right, everything is perfect – even if it really isn’t. Hmm.
In the run-up to the Paraguay match Sweden-coach Lars Lagerbäck and ... [read]
